And introducing Rudy
We are all Rudys, it has gotten into the culture.
“Take control over your life.”
It is interesting what happens to your life when you take control. You attract positive people, people willing to mentor you.
Prepare yourself with knowledge to prepare yourself in life.
He has a learning disability that took him longer to learn things.
People like to label you with who they think you are. They never measure your heart, your dedication. Discouragement and putdowns come from those people.
When he surrended to the people who said he could do it, his life changed.
The Vision. If you tell someone your vision, they steal it from you. Well Rudy that is not for you.
He was excited about school until 5th grade, sat in the front row. In 5th grade he had a teacher that was not very encouraging, she gave him an assignment to study the first five presidents on the night of a big baseball game. He didn’t study and the teacher asked him the next day who the fifth president. He gave her a look that he didn’t know and didn’t care. Didn’t learn it til he was 45. She made him get up and sit in the back of the room. That told him he was a bad guy, he was embarrassed in front of friends. What if she would have inspired him instead?
You will get to know everything you need to know when you hang around the right people.
He made his life simple and got to know what he needed to know.
He graduated 3rd from the bottom in school.
He went in the Navy. His parents taught him how to shine shoes, fold underwear. That made him a leader in the Navy. Leadership is about how much do you care. And then you put the right people around you that give you what you need to know.
Have a dream with passion and don’t quit. Do the little steps first and the big ones will come next. Prepare for the moment.
He didn’t have to be the fastest player to get on the football team. He didn’t have to be the biggest. He still played. He went to practice every day. He did whatever it took to stay. Attitude is action.
He got a phone call from the social director of the White House. The president wanted to him to come to dinner at the White House. A goofy thought can derail you. His was “i can’t go because my dad doesn’t like the president.” He didn’t say it outloud and he instead said “can you call back tomorrow and talk to my secretary.” He didn’t have one, but he found one to borrow in his network.
People with passion and character, you can’t fail!
The secretary was more excited. He told her to make it sound good. She answered the phone and said “this is Rudy International”
Get away from goofy thinkers. Reset and in that moment you can embrace opportunity.
People help people who like you.
Put a deaf ear to naysayers. “The Little Frog” clip.
When you hear the positive you mind is positive. There will still be roadblocks and challenges. It takes a man of character to say “I made a mistake, but I’m going to change that.”
Take nothing for granted, have gratitude.
When he got to the White House he saw the pictures of all the Presidents. He learned who the 5th presdient was James Monroe. He was so excited. He had to go some many places to finally learn.
Everything happens because of a dream. Things are tough. We are going to make mistakes. Get up and keep moving, pumping the positive because it will overtake the negative.
Everybody is somebody. He needed that to get approval to film at Notre Dame. He used his network and found out who he needed to talk to. He went there and walked into his office and asked, got approval.
Chase the money and you lose. Chase your dream and you will be happy. Money comes in different ways.
Don’t be afraid to fail.
Your question is “What is your purpose?” Get out of your comfort zone and you will find your purpose.
It took 10 years to make the movie Rudy. They had six minutes to shoot the scene of the final game, during the half time of a Notre Dame game.
The actors they gave a start to, still thank him today. Vince Vaughn, John Faberell, Sean Astin. Your dreams create other dreams.
They practiced it for a month to get the shot down. They did the sack in one take.
Youtube has the actual game film – you can search for Rudy play
He would do nothing different in life. Everything that is put in front of you is a lesson.
