Link Building – The Reality in Practice
Robert Adler – @Bofu2U
I got into this session late, so here we go…
Black Hat

-Promoting a lot of
Black Hat Extended
Black hat is the one he knows the most about, he gets called it all the time. They want to control every aspect of something. They are trying to make the “rank it” button over the next 6 months.
They mostly abuse
-blog comments
-blog networks/posts
-social bookmarks
-forum profiles/posts
-web 2.0s
-types that are not mainstream but people use it
For every tier that you add, you are theoretically adding a “cleaner” link
He says hats don’t matter. Just do what works. Always keep an open mind and test properties to see how your sites react.
Don’t trust “case studies” or “guides on what’s best” Do your own tests. Things are phased out all the time, no one knows.
His Guide for Links that work best:
-forum links
-blog links
-social links
-article links
-press release links
-directory links
-web 2.0s
One of the most publicized programs for generating links from Forums is Xrumer
It can:
-register accounts
-crack the CAPTCHAs with OCR automatically
-check the email accounts
-click the verification link
-setup a profile
-even post a message (new thread, another thread, or even register another account and reply to itself in the form of a Q&A)
Forum Links
outside of that realm, there are different types of links you can obtain
-sitewide links (site-wide footer)
-in content (in a post)
signature links
profile links (on your profile page)
category-wide links (like sponsoring a category)
category redirect (the entire category redirects)
Blog Links
-contextual blog post
-paid posts
-guest posts
-blog network posts
-buying a link in an existing post
-blog comments
-blog roll
-sitewide footer
“Social” Links
Social bookmarking links
-actual bookmarks – plurk
-comments
Stories (entities that can be rated, +1’d, Liked)
-facebook
-digg
-stumbleup
-twitter (retweets count)
Article links
-links in the body of an article
-links in the resource section/resource box
-links on the Author “about me” page
Press Releases
-when executed correctly can carry a good amount of link weight to your site. Free PR sites are not necessarily bad, but paid ones get you very nice syndication
Directory Submissions
-two types, the high quality are almost always paid, the lower quality ones are almost always free.
-listing on a list of other listings as well
-listing on a standalone page with your listing
Business.com
Yahoo directory
DMOZ (don’t count on this one)
Best of the Web
Jqeant (if you have products for sale)
Web 2.0s
Vague way to say sites with a social component. Any tyupe of community.
Profile Links like in YouTube
In Content Links
-video description
-article description
-updates, posts, etc
1 link isn’t just 1 link sometimes
-think about the power behind internal linking
now take that power and picture this. You just posted a blog entry about my session and you have a plugin that auto tweets it. Your post is now:
-linked to from your blog homepage
linked to from each of your tags
linked to form your achive
linked to from your category/categories
have a recent posts widget
Don’t forget about your tweet if you used tags/categories as #hashtags
you get a link direct from tweet
your tweet gets listed on the search pag for #hashtags
from digg, for every single entity that you thumbs up you get a link from the story back to your profile. The main page of your profile gets an internal link.
-submit story
-thumbs up 20 stories
-your profile now has 20 internal links
graphic from hubpages
Passive Promotion through syndication
if you do link building using any nmber of methods and they give you an RSS feed, submit it for syndication
You want to do this especially if you going to update the same source multiple times like an article directory – ex Ezine Articles
-feedfury.com, feedage.com, feedfairy.com, rssmountain.com
There is no point in doing promotion if no one is going to see it. It must be able to be viewed by other people.

Questions
When you build links should you attempt to get them crawled?
-he doesn’t care, he would rather the search engines find them naturally rather than force it.
How do those directory sites make money?
-they survive by giving stuff away for free, but have premium links.
Links wheels still work, but most people do them differently then he does
Contextual links(articles, blog posts) work much better than non-contextual (xrumer, pligg)
No follow links are still links
