SEO Clinic –
Rae Hoffman-Dolan – sugarrae.com, @sugarrae
Kenny Hyder – Hyder Media – @kennyhyder
Taylor Pratt – works for Raven Internet Marketing Tools – @RavenPratt
Michael Martin – Covario – @googleandblog
Jensonusa.com
is a provider of mountain biking, and road biking supplies
they rank well for specific terms, but not for general cycling terms
Kenny – homepage redirects to a long string query but not for Rae
this website just went live on Wednesday – new url structure, they used 301 redirects from old pages
Rae – if you do a site:jensonusa.com the homepage does not come up first and that usually signifies a problem
Kenny – in the code for the homepage it is really messy, you want to condense and minify to reduce load time – it is on the junction solutions platform – can be a problem when using a platform
Taylor – you have an affiliate running the same descriptions on their website – so rewrite the affiliate description datafeed – don’t give them as much information as what is on your website
Rae – Product page is showing 100% cotton as the description and generic info for shipping, etc. Basically looks like a blank page, and is probably the same as the rest of the t-shirts, so this gives a duplicate content penalty
Kenny – title tags, description tags are really important and you want to spend time handwriting them for each page so that they do not look automatically generated – don’t need to append your company name to the end of every title tag – you want to rank for your company name on your homepage and that is it
Michael – rel conancial, search pages are being cached and you want to exclude that
Rae – thinks there are a lot of duplicate issues – there are pages that are ranking that have no items on it – either populate the page or 301 redirect it
Kenny – they homepage has 11 h1 tags, 0 h2 tags and 1 h3 tags – you want to distribute the content on your site with what are the most important things on your page – every link on the homepage as a header tag and that is not good
Taylor – should utilize schemas on this site – go into webmaster tools and teach them what your parameters are
Rae – change your datafeed not the affiliates cause they are already using it, follow up with customers to get reviews for your items and ask them for them, even give them a discount code to do it
FashionableDogClothes.com
They are trying to rank for Fashionable Dog Clothes
It is a drop shipping site
He rewrote descriptions from the drop shipper – which is good
Kenny – they are not coming up for their exact match domain – the homepage is currently just a bunch of featured items – Google likes to see content, most people are not trying to convert a sale on the homepage – think about how to re-craft your homepage so it is a front to the site and not a product page Rae – biggest issue is no links – what are you doing to get links – they have written articles, commented on blogs,
The blog is a different domain – people who built the website said it could not be on the same domain – Hire some new people!
Rae – Remove the item codes from the title tag, it takes up space and keyword density
He says he is developing links to the main site, but no links are coming up in the reports
Michael – points at the link page – should not be there – it points to other sites
Rae – sometimes developers will shove in links to sites
Taylor – Has categories on both sides of site
Rae – has a link to an analytics company in the footer, there are many free alternatives that you do not have to link to such as Google Analytics
Kenny – there is a lot of repeat text in description tags, that hurts negatively – code looks okay, but mostly looks to be a content problem – make the pages better for the user which makes them better for search
Michael – asks if he works with any rescue leagues or shelters – that is a great way to build links and your business by giving them clothes
Rae – the shopping cart should not be indexed – put a disallow in the robots.txt – search as well
Taylor – none of the images have any alt text – use some schema micro data – Schemacreator.org
Grammarly.com
is in the grammar checking space, analyzes text for how to improve your writing
Rae – there are 12,000 pages that are indexed but they may be low quality
Kenny – they rank number 3 for grammar check – quite a large number of backlinks – what would they like to see improve?
Rae – there is a whole handbook that does not carry the style sheet, so need to figure out if they are supposed to be there and add one or 301 the pages
Taylor – can’t find what analytics they are using on the blog – very important to set up goals to see what their top topics is
Rae- there is a document by Yoast.com which is a step by step guide for WordPress SEO – do a google search for that
Taylor – Should separate the content on the homepage to new pages because there is too much
PreKscholars.com
Taylor – first thing is the peel down on the front page – taking a long time for the page to load
Rae – can’t see the store button because of the peel down – from a usability standpoint that is bad – a must have book for anyone is Don’t Make Me Think
Michael – have a mobile recognition so that a popup comes up for anyone visiting the site from a phone to download the app – have a simple mobile rendering – mobile user agent detection – javascript out there to rerender the page for mobile – it loads too slow for phones
Taylor – has some neat calculators on the site – great way to get links – resources for teachers for certifications, how much they can make in each state
Rae – site renders as www.prekscholars.com and prekscholars.com and google thinks they are two separate websites – having canonical issues – search for how to correct canonical issues – Forcehttps is a plugin for wordpress sites that have secure pages to correct canonical issues
ContentWatch.com
productivity management, secure web gateways
wants to find ways to rank for other keywords
also offers netnanny and many of the keywords are the same
Rae – they have the https canonical issues – clean that up as soon as possible
Taylor – your title tags are really really long, cut them down by half – if you want to target new keywords then create new pages
Rae – there are subdomains that are indexed – some of it is dev stuff, some is Q & A
Taylor – you have white papers only offered as a PDF and you should offer it as html too with option to download as pdf for the content.
Rae – Panda update is all about duplicate content – even large brands are being hit by it. Make sure your site is only rendering on one domain. If you need subdomains then make sure it is unique content or restrict the search engines.
Taylor – they switched comment system to Facebook and that helped make it easier for people to comment, traffic increased – good social signals.
Michael – they are ranking pretty good, so what is goal? He want so to be 1-3 in search engines
Kenny – making pages that are made for each product individually – get more focused – they have a good backlink portfolio – once you craft those pages, then build links directly to those pages
Rae – give some Mom Bloggers access to Net Nanny so that they can review it – even if they give a bad review, great way to get links – Do not require them to link to you! – must get keyword links in a highly competitive space – can have best onsite SEO in the world, but you need to have backlinks to rank
Taylor – blog is on completely different domain – a link in the footer to it on the mainpage
